“The feminine figure is something natural in my work, it’s like a piece of me represented
in each canvas.
I like to show to the viewer just a little piece of the full scene. I like to leave space for the
viewer’s imagination.
That sentence right there is what captivates me about the work of Portuguese artist, Duma. I came across these beautiful paintings sometime in 2010 & rediscovered them recently. I’m amazed at how realistic these paintings look (Duma studied at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon) but what gets me the most is the fact that every single one of her paintings/artworks never reveals the eyes. Of course (as with most good art), there is a reason behind this…so that you can create your own story about the figure in the image. In Duma’s own words, “this creates a mystery”.
That it does…and it also adds this sensual quality that really captures the essence of femininity just perfectly. Combine that with the fashion angle most of her work has and you can see why Duma is today’s Pheenix Spotlite artist.

Love the light and shadow effects– truly superb. Thanks for sharing.
